IELTS Eligibility Criteria

Certain visa types require the primary applicant to meet an English language standard. The standard is tested under the International English Language Testing System (IELTS). The purpose of the IELTS test is to evaluate the ability of English language of an applicant. IELTS Test is applicable to those visa applicants who want to study work or migrate to Australia, Canada, New Zealand & UK.

Each country sets their own parameter for IELTS requirements based on Visa Type. Scores requirements will also vary based on your visa, and where you plan to study or work.

Appearing IELTS – Eligibility Criteria

There are no strict IELTS eligibility criteria for the test takers.

Types of IELTS Test

There are two [2] Different types of IELTS Test i) Academic IELTS Test & ii) General Training IELTS Test. During the time of application, you need to specify your choice.

The Academic IELTS test is for those who are planning their study at undergraduate or postgraduate level at university. On the other hand, the General IELTS test is for a lower level of courses such as in colleges or high schools.

Test format of IELTS Exam

There are four [4] levels of exam

  1. Listening Exam: This test lasts for half an hour and comprises four sections in which difficulty level increases with clearing one section.
  2. Reading Exam: This test lasts for an hour. As per your choice, you will be required to give Academic Reading Test or a General Training Reading Test. It has three sections.
  3. Writing Exam: This exam also lasts for an hour. You will require attempting two writing tasks in different writing styles.
  4. Speaking Test: This phase of the exam comprises a one-to-one interview with a trained IELTS examiner. You will be lead by the examiner via all three sections of the exam.

IELTS Preparation Tips

  • Spend quality time (not quantity) over-improving your comprehension and reading skills.
  • Always remember, time management is the foremost thing in the IELTS exam.
  • Go through English newspapers and magazines.
  • Know your weaker points and work on them and at the same time concentrate on your strong points so as to make them stronger.

The IELTS scores explained

Band 9: Expert user:One has fully operational command of the language: appropriate, accurate and fluent with complete understanding.
Band 8: Very good user:One has fully operational command of the language with only occasional Un-systematic inaccuracies and. Misunderstandings may occur in unfamiliar situations. Handles complex detailed argumentation well.
Band 7: Good user:One has operational command of the language, though with occasional inaccuracies and misunderstandings in some situations. Generally handles complex language well and understands detailed reasoning.
Band 6: Competent user:One has a generally effective command of the language despite some inaccuracies and misunderstandings. Can use and understand fairly complex language, particularly in familiar situations.
Band 5: Modest user:One has partial command of the language, coping with overall meaning in most situations, though is likely to make many mistakes. Should be able to handle basic communication in own field.
Band 4: Limited user:Basic competence is limited to familiar situations. Have frequent problems in understanding and expression. Is not able to use complex language.

IELTS examinations are available worldwide. Information on fees, available test dates and application forms are available on the IELTS website, www.ielts.org.

Where the nominated occupation requires a higher level of English because it forms part of that occupation’s registration, licensing or membership requirement, the visa applicant must have at least the standard of English language proficiency required for the grant of that registration, license or membership. Some visas require the applicant to achieve an overall IELTS score of 6, for example. It should be noted that a score describes an applicant with a “competent” command of English.

The table below chart describes the English language abilities that can be expected from candidates with different IELTS scores.

Exemptions to the English language test include:

  • The applicant is a passport holder from Canada, New Zealand, the Republic of Ireland, the United Kingdom or the United States of America.
  • The nominated occupation does not require a level of English language proficiency for grant of registration, licence or membership, and the applicant’s nominated occupation is within the highly skilled major groups 1-3 of the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO), comprising managers, administrators, professionals and associate professionals.
  • The applicant’s nominated occupation does not require a level of English language proficiency for grant of registration, licence or membership, and they have completed at least five years of continuous full time study in a secondary and/or higher education institution where instruction was conducted in English.

    please advise if the Subclass 189 (skilled independent – permanent) visa requires an applicant to write the academic test or general training test. Vetassess was the assessing authority however they did not stipulate the IELTS requirements. it is for an Internal Auditor applicant

    1. Hello Savanah,
      For the GSM application you need to write only general IELTS test. You need to understand that internal auditor is not available on SOL 1 . In this case you are eligible to lodge for limited subclass of visas.

    My husband is a geologist from South Africa with a german passport. Will he need to do an IELTS test? He did one 3 years ago and high proficiency of english but it is probably invalid now?

      I think you have not understood the EOI process. I think you need to take services of a registered agent to get your EOI processed.

    I do not have Engineering degree nor Financial degree.

    IELTS Score is 6.5 average.

    I am planning to apply for australia PR. I am into IT field from the past 6+ years and i completed my assessment with ACS and the result is positive. I written my IELTS exam and got an over all score of 6.0. Is there any possibility for any state sponsorship to apply.

      Having a UK passport shows Competent English ability – but no points are awarded.If your partner meets 60 points then he does not need to sit for IELTS.
      But if he needs extra points to meet the 60 points criteria then he will need to sit the IELTS to get at least 7’s in each component to get 10 points for Proficient language.

      UK passport is equivalent to IELTS of 6.5

    I suppose to apply Ausi PR under skill assessment program. As i know for the general accountant category they need band score of 7 each under academic module. Please let me know is it the same criteria by applying under external auditor category as well.Is there any possibility to apply with less IELTS band scores

    I have a question here. I have my skill assessment done sometime back as per the ACS details, age and qualification I have total 50 points. Now there 3 options for me
    1. Get my spouse ACS which would give me 50 points and I can apply for the state sponsorship visa.
    2. Get IELTS score of 7 in all (currently i have 8.5, 7.5, 7 and 6.5) and apply for 189.
    3. As per my ACS assessment they considered my experience from August 2010. So i would wait till August 2015 and then reapply for ACS (then i will get 5 more points since my experince will be 5+ by Aug 2015) and then get ACS 5 points from my wife and apply.

    Whats ur opinion on this?
    If i get IELTS score of 7 in all, then will get any added advantage in EOI?

    Currently I am on 457 visa as a restaurant manager which was approved on March 2015. Now we are planning to lodge RSMS and I have overall 6 ielts score which was held on 2014 ( R 6.5, W 6.5 L 5.5 and S 6) and recently I have done ielts but again I have got 6 each ( L 6.5 R 6.5 W 6 and S 5.5). I have heard that this score will be conunted as 6. Is this right? I have diploma of business in Australia, bachelor from Nepal. 3 years of work experience overseas. Am I eligible with these documents to apply for RSMS?

      Current requirement for RSMS is 6 in all bands in IELTS so you need to re-attempt the same . but you can also take PTE or Tofel instead of IELTS where you can get a better score. send your all docs to advice you for the suitability for RSMS.

  39. Hello, I have score overall band score of 6.5 ( Speaking:7, Listening: 6.5, Writing: 6, Reading:5.5) unfortunately I couldn’t crack on reading. Is there a scheme allows to accept if I clear reading with minimum 6 score for GSM (189, 190) . Or do I need to clear once again in all. I heard from someone there is change allows if you clear second time which ever having less score and aggregated.

      The IELTS test score for the nursing in australia vary from uni to uni. but some uni’s accept 6.5 with 6 in all bands, and some uni’s ask for 7 in all bands in IELTS.

      The bridging visa time will not be considered under the 457 visa duration for the PR visa. The IELTS score is 6 in all bands or we can take an exemption based on your qualification and skill.

    I took the IELTS test a couple of months ago and achieved an overall score of 8.5. The problem though is that in one of the bands I’ve scored a 6.5.

    Is there a way for me to claim the points given to a proficient speaker? And if not, will there be some changes in this year’s rules regarding the English scores.

I had graduated from Finland in English medium in 2012 and because of this University waived me an English language. I am wondering if Australian immigration needs IELTS report to grant visa.

      The university in Australia may require the English language requirement , but we can ask for an exemption as you have studied in UK at a level of masters. send us your documents and area of interest , so that we can check with the universities and get back to you on your requirement.

    i am Salman, i am 29 and single. i have done Mba FINANCE . I was told by a consultant that i need 6.5 in each module of ielts (didnt mention academic or general)

    he told me i can potential migrate to australia with state nomination with which i ll score the required 60 points. i appeared in ielts general. scored overall 6.5 with L and R 6.5 each and W and S 6.0 each

    now i have heard that the skill assessment agency wants accountant to have academic ielts with 7.0 in each module.

    so what u say about my situation , can i apply with current ielts i have now which is fresh.
    and do i have to select the state my self or they ll tell me for which state I should apply for after my skill assesment believe is assesment of my academic transcripts and degree and ielts , and no need of providing experience certificate now. am i right?

      You have a complicated situation. there are multiple things which you need to address in your application . I will answer one that you need to retake your IELTS and write academic version and score 7 in all bands if your skill fits into accounting category. Don’t take hasty decisions as once submitted documents cannot be updated. so once you take a step use the help of a migration agent who is registered.

      You need to be on constant check out for different states which are getting opened for your skill. recently you lost the opportunity to apply for QLD state nomination who has accepted applications for 6 in all bands. Better use an agent who can update you on regular intervals. NSW state nomination is totally at their discretion. Send your complete profile for evaluation , see if you can get further points to expedite your application.

    I arrived in Australia this month only. I am on visa 457. I am a Mechanical Engineer with almost 10 years experience. I took IELTS (General) in June-2016 and scored overall 7 (Listening – 8, Reading – 7, Writing – 6.5 and Speaking -7).

    Am I eligible to apply for PR, if I am how long would I need to wait ?

    I am a software engineer with 7 years of experience and I am planning to apply for Australian PR under “Skilled Independent Subclass 189”.
    Without IELTS/PTE my total score is 55 points(65 points in total required).
    My query is mainly regarding IELTS score.
    If I score average 6.5 or 7 ( 6.5 plus in all sections) I will get 10 points and I will be eligible to apply. I got to know, for ACS/ICT(Computer Science) applicants IELTS avg 8 and in all section 8 is required to
    get a PR. Is that true?Apart from eligibility , how far a band score of 7 and 8 matter for getting a PR for a software engineer?

      Software engineer is their in the skill occupation list which will give you eligibility for 189 sublass of visa. you will only 0 points if you get 6 in all bands are any where less than 7 in all bands in IELTS or 65 in all bands in PTE. But if you have 6 in all bands in IELTS and eligible to get 55 points , you can opt for 190 subclass which will be also a PR.

    I got two IELTS test scores. given below
    Test 1: L-8.5, R-8.0, W-6.5, S-7.5, overall= 7.5
    test 2: L-8.5, R-9.0 w-7.0, S-6.5, Overall= 8

    Does it count as 7.0 in all sections if if apply for 189 visa? Or do I have to get all through 7.0 in a single test score?

      You need to get 7 in all components in a single sitting. with your current scores you will not get points for your English test.

    1. Hello Shridul,
      Selection of a skill will depend on your previous experience. So better you share your resume to understand which skill you can fit into. for getting spouse points she needs to be skilled and have skilled work experience which is on the skill occupation list. she also need to score IELTS 6 in all bands if she has to give you 5 points. In your scenario she cannot provide you 5 points for your PR application.

  86. I just came to know that 7 each is not needed in 1 attempt for Australian immigration , it is equivalent to
    7 each in 2 attempts subjected to 3 conditions
    1) both attempts are not 6 months apart
    2) in both attempts you have min 7 average
    3) in both attempts you have no module less than 6.5 score
    Can you please confirm it ?

    I am applying for student visa subclass 500, I have been admitted to PhD study in Engineering at University of Queensland after finishing 1 year master degree in UK. The university has admitted me without providing any English language test results.

    When I checked the document checklist page on the official government website based on my country of passport (Jordan) and education provider it didn’t mention that I need to provide evidence of my English language skills for the student visa.

    Even though, it is mentioned in the general website that you might be exempt from providing evidence if one of specific conditions applies, none of these conditions applies to my situation except the first one which I am not sure if it is applies to my case or not:
    “you are enrolled in full-time school studies as a principal course including in a secondary exchange programme, a postgraduate research course, a standalone English Language Intensive Course for Overseas Students (ELICOS), and Foreign Affairs or Defence sponsored students”

    Can you please advise me what I have to do in this case? I didn’t lodge my application yet but I have to lodge it very soon and there are no close date for IELTS exam in my country.

  93. I am soon applying for a 485 visa. However, I have some questions about my IELTS:
    1) I have an academic IELTS results valid until July 23, 2018 (so it will expire soon). If I lodge my 485 visa application online on July 16, 2018 (1 week before my IELTS results expire), will it still be a valid document and will Immigration accept it?

    2) If I need to take another IELTS for a 485 visa, which one should I take- academic or general?

      your english score should be valid even at the time of grant so , I would advice you to take up a new PTE Academic test and lodge your 489 visa.

  98. I am a primary applicant with BCA and 8 years of work exp my total points are 60 including 10 points of PTE.
    My wife has also done BCA with 3 years of work exp as Social worker we both are on the same occupation list.
    We both have cleared PTE for 10 points

    My question is

    Can i claim my partners 10 points after Nov 2019. As she has done BCA and worked as a social worker voluntarly .
