This visa allows a child to stay in Australia temporarily while we process their parent’s permanent Partner visa application.
With this visa the child can
- Move to or stay in Australia until we decide on their parent’s permanent Partner visa application
- Travel to and from Australia
- Work and study in Australia
Once the child has been granted this visa, they must apply to be added to their parent’s permanent Partner visa application.
Travel
The child can travel to and from Australia as often as they wish while the visa is valid.
Time spent outside Australia does not extend the visa.
How long the child can stay
This is a temporary visa. It starts on the date we grant the visa.
The child can stay until we decide their parent’s permanent Partner visa application or their parent withdraws their permanent Partner visa application.
Stay longer
The child can’t stay in Australia longer by extending this visa.
Cost
The visa costs AUD2,665 for the main applicant.
There is also a charge for each dependent child who applies for the visa with the main applicant.
There might also be other costs for health checks, police certificates and biometrics.
Processing times
We don’t provide processing times for this visa. Applications are subject to capping and queueing.
Your application might take longer to process if:
- you do not fill it in correctly
- you do not include all the documents we need or we need more information from you
- it takes us time to verify your information
We can’t process your application if you don’t pay the correct visa application charge. We will notify you if this is the case and if necessary return your application.
The child’s obligations
The child and any of their dependent children who are granted the visa must meet all visa conditions and obey Australian laws.
Once the child has been granted this visa, they must apply to be added to their parent’s permanent Partner visa application.

We assess applications for this visa in 2 stages.
- Check eligibility and either add the application to the queue or refuse it.
- Continue assessing the application when a place becomes available and make a decision.
Eligibility
- Be dependent on a parent who holds a certain visa
- Have a sponsor
- The child must be either:
- under 18 years
- over 18 years and financially dependent on the parent who has the temporary Partner or Dependent Child visa
- You must meet our health requirement.
- You must meet our character requirement.
- Sign The Australian Value Statement
- Have repaid debt to the Australian Government
