Global Talent Visa
Before going further we need to understand what is Global Talent Visa [GTV]. The global talent visa program is a new initiative by the Australian government to attract global talent to live and work in Australia. The program is focused on attracting international students and graduates who are looking for a long-term commitment to work in Australia, with the goal of developing their skills in Australia.
The GTI program involves the Department taking on a more active role by engaging “Global Talent Officers” (GTO) in key locations overseas to invite targeted individuals to apply for an Australian visa. GTOs will work with countries in their regions and attend key events/expos to promote this program.
Aims to attract highly skilled individuals for a simplified and prioritized permanent residency visa process.
The program’s focus is to attract worldwide exceptional talent to increase Australia’s competitiveness in innovation.
With the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic, this program became a major focus for the Department of Home Affairs with 15,000 spots available in the 2020-2021 Skilled Migration program.
To be eligible, you must be highly skilled in one of the target areas and be able to attract a salary that meets the high-income threshold.

Talent
Candidates must have an “internationally recognised record of exceptional and outstanding achievement” in one of the target areas. Candidates must still be prominent in their field of expertise and show they can be an asset to Australia.
This means candidates must be of high standard and show an exceptional track record of professional achievement. This may include patents, senior roles, professional awards, international publications of international relevance and memberships.
Recent PhD graduates also must demonstrate their exceptional talent and international recognition. This may include research of international interest and significance, relevant to an international audience, presented at international forums, relevant to Australian academia and with potential to drive innovation and productivity in an international context.
Your “achievement and international standing” will need to be attested by an eligible Nominator. The nominator must be an Australian citizen, Australian resident, eligible New Zealand citizen or an Australian organisation with a national reputation in your field of expertise. Peak Australian bodies are also eligible to be nominators.
Income:
Candidates must:
- Demonstrate the ability to meet the salary threshold of AUD153,600* through current salary or future job offers or
- Be a recent PhD graduate
*Value based on the Fair Work high-income threshold (FWHIT), and is updated regularly.
Process
To be considered for this program, candidates must first lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI) with the Department of Home Affairs. This is the most important step of the Global Talent Independent process, yet many candidates fall short of highlighting their achievements even though they may meet the criteria. The Global Talent Visa program is the most attractive for intending professional migrants and the volume of applications means candidates need to stand out and clearly demonstrate their achievements and international standing to Global Talent Officers.
If successful at the EOI stage, Global Talent Independent candidates will receive a unique identifier to use in the application of a Subclass 858 Distinguished Talent Visa.
At the visa stage, among other stringent visa criteria, candidates need to provide the nomination of an Australian individual or organization with a national reputation in their field of expertise via Form 1000.
